UNIMA

The UNion Internationale de la MArionnette (UNIMA)

Established in 1929, UNIMA is an international Non-Governmental Organisation that brings together people from around the world who contribute to the development of the art of puppetry. Its objective is to use this art to promote human values such as peace and mutual understanding among people, regardless of race, political or religious convictions, and cultural differences. This aligns with the respect for fundamental human rights as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations on December 10th, 1948.

ROLE

  • The role of UNIMA is to promote puppetry as a vital medium for cultural expression, education, and global connection. Through its governing bodies—including the Congress, Council, Auditing Commission, Executive Committee, Board, 16 specialized Commissions, National Centres, and Representatives—UNIMA fosters international collaboration, supports events, research, and professional training, and advocates for puppeteers' rights. By preserving puppetry traditions and encouraging innovation, UNIMA contributes to arts development, and cultural diplomacy, and promotes values such as peace and mutual understanding across communities worldwide.

OPERATIONS

  • UNIMA International, with its office in Charleville-Mézières, France, manages all UNIMA National Centres and representations, along with direct members in countries without an established center. Together with its governing bodies, UNIMA organizes Councils and Congresses, which serve as platforms for decision-making and collaboration among members. The Council, composed of elected Councillors from member countries, meets to discuss initiatives and guide the organization's activities. The Congress, held every four years, serves as the supreme body where significant decisions are made, including the selection of host countries for future events.

MEMBER STATE

  • UNIMA encompasses more than 90 countries and boasts over 7,000 members

UNIMA KOREA

  • UNIMA Korea, established in 1979 in line with the founding principles of the International Puppetry Association (UNIMA), serves as the Korean center. It supports the development of domestic puppetry through festival support, research, and professional puppetry education. It also aims to contribute to the globalization of Korean puppetry by acting as a platform for member exchanges and international collaborations.

  • Every four years, UNIMA convenes to select the host country (city) for the World Puppetry Congress through a voting process involving over 100 member countries. At the 23rd UNIMA Congress held online in April 2021, Chuncheon was selected as the host city for the 2025 World UNIMA Congress.

We are committed to making the 2025 UNIMA Congress and Festival the best ever!
